outil monitoring sur linux

clipped from www.linux.com

Feature: System Administration

Linux is an excellent platform for network administration. If you want to monitor your network traffic, you can find many tools -- some accessible from a Web interface, others using a graphical interface -- but nothing beats the speed of the command line. Command-line tools are also useful in shell scripts, where they can help you perform complex tasks. Here's a handful of my favorites for monitoring network traffic.

Atop is a system and process manager that displays network traffic, along with other useful information such as CPU consumption, memory usage, and a process list. Atop has a handful of options to be passed to at startup. To see network network-related information and save it to a log file located in /var/log, start the application with atop -N > /var/log/atopnet.log.

What to Use Instead of OiNK

What to use instead of Oink? Brokep from The Pirate Bay lays down a nice list of music related BitTorrent tracker sites to use while the dust settles from the recent closure of the once great "Pink Palace" known as OiNK.

Wine ..fix enhanced desktop integration for Wine in Ubuntu

Winefix - improved desktop integration for Wine

A script called winefix. In short, it allows Wine applications to be run just as easily as those native to Linux, meaning that they can be linked to or run from any directory, whether from a terminal or even a file manager like nautilus. It also handles some of the more awkward Wine extensions like .lnk and .msi, akkowing them to be run with a double click.

create vmware for free

Faire une image vmware gratuite de son pc pour rien
clipped from freelancefolder.com

How To Use VMWare To Survive A Computer Crash

Two Ways To Make This Happen:

  • Get the free VMware Converter and use it to make a Virtual Machine image of your existing machine. Simplest solution.
  • If you pony up about $189 you can get VMWare Workstation - a program that will let you create virtual machines from scratch. (Author’s note:  Helpful Diggers have let me know that VMWare Server will let you create images for free.  Huzzah!)  Creating custom images can be useful if you want to make a lean version of your emergency image, with only the software you absolutely need to get the job done, or you want to make multiple images with slightly different configurations.

    Bit torrent over ssh

BitTorrent: Bypass any Firewall or Throttling ISP with SSH

I wouldn’t recommend BitTorrent over SSH as a permanent solution since it will cripple the servers of the SSH providers. If you’re looking for a long term solution check out a VPN service such as Relakks.

You need an SSH account in order to get this working. You can try one of these free shell providers from this list. I currently use silenceisdefeat which requires a small $1 donation. However, the account is immediately activated and works fine for me.

Récupérer ses K7 en mp3 avec audacity

    clipped from www.linux.com

You've been ripping CDs for years, but what about those dusty cassette tapes
in your attic and all that bargain-basement vinyl at used book sales? With
Audacity, you can capture those vintage tunes, clean up their sound, and
carry them around on your MP3 player.

Audacity is a powerful free cross-platform audio editor. It includes tools such as noise removal filters and automatic track splitting that can speed up the process of turning your antique audio into shiny new MP3s or Oggs.

Digitizing records and tapes with Audacity

    Manual track splitting

If you want to edit your MP3 tags, you don't need to do it in Audacity and re-export the files. You can use the id3v2 tool to edit MP3 tags from the command line, or try EasyTAG for a point-and-click interface to edit the tags in MP3s or Oggs.

    Xming better than cygwin/x

    clipped from www.linux.com

Use Linux over Windows with Xming

One of the nice things about the X Window System is its ability to display X apps running remotely on a local machine. One of the not-so-nice things about Microsoft Windows is the complete lack of native support for displaying X applications. If you find yourself working on Windows but wanting to use Linux apps at the same time, Xming can do the job. Xming is a port of X Window System to Microsoft Windows that's free and easy to use.

Xming is easy to use and provides an excellent X server for folks who have to run Windows. Since it's free software, it's also much better for the budget than commercial X servers for Windows, and it enjoys fairly frequent releases, so it should be around for some time to come.

    Simulating Cisco and Linux Networks

Currently Cisco is the leader in Networking market, and Linux, the leader in Server market. So, if you want to test your complex (or not so complex) network configurations before buying any actual linux servers or the very expensive cisco routers, then you can use Dynamips to simulate Cisco Router/Switch and VNUML (Virtual Network User Mode Linux) to simulate your linux servers/routers. Both Dynamips and VNUML are open source and free.

    Converting pst to maildir format

    clipped from www.howtoforge.com

One of the challenges you may face when converting an office from Microsoft Windows to Linux is that many people archive their e-mail in PST files. There are PST tools available, but most of them are commercial, since the PST file format is closed and protected by Microsoft. There are several non-commercial methods to achieve roughly the same goal, and in this tutorial we use IMAP (more specifically, courier-imap) to convert all our e-mails from PST to the Maildir format. The advantage of this approach is that you also lay the foundation for a new mail system, with all your old e-mails already imported the day you switch over.

TorrentTAB is a new BitTorrent meta-search engine that displays the search results in a tabbed view. Personally I’m not a big fan of meta-search engines, but I know others like it. The tabbed searching works quite well. TorrentTAB site currently searches Isohunt, Mininova, Torrentz, BTjunkie, Meganova, and Torrentspy.

JunkNova is a torrent review site that keeps you up to date on all the stuff that’s available on BitTorrent, similar to sites like rlslog and hypoh. JunkNova is brought to you by the makers of TorrentScoop, a Google-powered BitTorent search engine.

    Repairing Linux Hard disk

    clipped from www.linux-watch.com
My Great Linux System Repair Adventure
For simple file problems, ReiserFS restores the file system by replaying its transaction log journal. That's as it should be. The whole point of a journaling file system is that you can replay disk writes when something goes wrong.
So, now I pulled out my freshly burned copy of SystemRescueCd 0.35. SystemRescueCd, if you've never met it, is the best single CD bootable system repair disk I know.
Now, playing tricks with RAM is a subject unto itself. For more on that subject, visit sites like Extreme Tech and Tom's Hardware and look for stories on overclocking.
Oh, and a final note: SystemRescueCD can also work the same magic on your Windows systems. I can't recommend this mini-distribution enough for anyone who might face repairing any Unix, Linux, or Windows-based computer.
